Shiny robopop with enough nods towards Bis and Black Box Recorder to make John Peel a fan, Baxendale practically define the term ‘cult band.’
Baxendale are Tim, Alex and Senay. Tim and Alex started working together the week that Never Ever by All Saints went top 10. Tim had a bunch of ideas for ‘proper pop songs’. Alex had a Swedish-lite guitar style and a love of gloopy noises. Together they set about creating the post-Spice pop ideal.
Early live shows featured the elegant Miss Kate Whitley on keyboards, and as the audience didn’t boo them off they carried on. The songs got better, the sound got groovier and well, the dancing caught on.
Their first single, I Love The Sound of Dance Music, (spring 98, Invicta HiFi) went down splendidly all over Europe, and their second, Battery Acid, faired even better, receiving smashing reviews and oodles of radioplay.
The band recorded their third single the ‘Music for Girls ep’ in late 1998 with the help of sometime member Kate Pemberton on vocal duties. The elegant Miss Whitley left to become a photographer and Tim discovered the mysterious Senay, a professional disco-ligger and asked her to complete the line-up.
The rest is history!
